With the exhibition launch just around the corner, Life Finds a Way is finally coming together as a fully realized, immersive experience. Months of planning, sculpting, editing, and refining are culminating in a space designed to transport visitors into the delicate balance between decay, renewal, and resilience. Every element has been crafted to tell a story - one that explores how nature persistently reclaims what humanity leaves behind. But before the doors open, there are still final details to perfect. Because no matter how meticulously something is planned, there are always last-minute surprises, challenges, and creative pivots that arise in the eleventh hour.
Constructing the Tech Wall
One of the last major pieces of the exhibition to come together was the tech wall - a sculptural installation that embodies the central themes of Life Finds a Way. This curated collection of obsolete, discarded devices overtaken by organic decay serves as both a visual and conceptual extension of the framed works. By integrating physical remnants of consumer technology directly into the exhibition space, the installation offers a tangible representation of nature’s quiet resilience against human-made waste.
The process of preparing the objects was just as meticulous as sculpting the original props. A carefully curated selection of e-waste - including rusted motherboards, outdated cell phones, a landline telephone, a Tamagotchi, and even a laptop - was transformed through layers of moss, corrosion, and organic textures. Each piece was deliberately aged, not just for aesthetic effect, but to evoke the eerie beauty of forgotten objects slowly merging with the natural world. One motherboard, untouched for years, had even artificially become home to a black widow spider - an unsettling yet perfect example of nature’s ability to reclaim and repurpose human artifacts.
To add another element of unease, a series of 3D-printed cockroaches was designed to infest the broken laptop. Each was meticulously painted and positioned to appear as though they had made the circuitry their home, crawling across the surface and disappearing into the shadows of the fractured keyboard. Their presence reinforces the narrative of persistence - how even in abandoned spaces, life inevitably finds a way to thrive.
With the objects fully aged and detailed, the next challenge was arranging them on the wall in a way that mimicked the slow, creeping advance of nature’s reclamation. The layout needed to feel organic yet deliberate, chaotic yet balanced.
While planning the layout of the tech wall, I initially used paper cutouts of each prop to experiment with placement before committing to drilling. This method turned out to be incredibly useful, allowing me to make adjustments without the risk of damaging the gallery walls prematurely.
However, when it came time to drill, I encountered a major issue - certain spots I had planned to use had metal beams behind the wall, making it impossible to install hooks in those locations. This forced me to adjust the positioning on the spot, which took longer than expected and slightly altered my original vision. Although this setback was a little frustrating, it reinforced the importance of staying flexible in installation. In the end, adapting to the constraints of the space led to a slightly different - but still effective - composition for the tech wall.
Strategic lighting was introduced to emphasize the intricate details - rusted metal, tangled wires, the delicate filaments of moss - ensuring that every nuance was visible without overwhelming the surrounding artwork.
Unpacking & Assembling the Space
With the tech wall in place, the next step was bringing the entire exhibition to life within the gallery space. Every piece - each sculpture, each print, each sound element - had to be carefully positioned to create a cohesive, immersive environment. The A1 prints, transported in protective sleeves, were meticulously unwrapped and arranged for mounting. The frames, fitted with plexiglass, required precise placement using custom 3D-printed spacers to ensure uniform alignment. Meanwhile, each sculptural piece was unboxed and inspected for any damage sustained in transit.
At this stage, seeing the individual components of the exhibition come together was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. For months, these elements had existed independently - the props sculpted early last year, the photographs taken and edited over countless late nights, the soundscapes conceptualized in recent months. Now, at last, everything was coexisting in the same space, forming a singular, immersive experience.
Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving
Of course, no exhibition setup is without its challenges. As I worked through the final details, adjustments were necessary. Some prints needed to be repositioned slightly for better alignment with the space’s natural flow. A few sculptural props required reinforcement to ensure they remained securely in place.
Cable management - often an afterthought - quickly became an unexpected hurdle. Ensuring that the soundscape speakers remained discreet while still providing an immersive auditory experience required some strategic placement and experimentation. Every wire had to be concealed or incorporated seamlessly into the environment.
The tech wall, despite its striking presence, also needed some last-minute refinements. The addition of dispersed lighting played a critical role in drawing attention to the intricate textures of decay without making the installation feel separate from the rest of the exhibition. It was a delicate balance - highlighting without overpowering, enhancing without distracting.
Experiencing the Exhibition as a Visitor
Unlike traditional exhibitions with a clear sequence, Life Finds a Way is meant to be open-ended and immersive, encouraging viewers to explore at their own pace rather than following a fixed path.
The soft but directional lighting guides the eye toward specific textures - highlighting the corrosion on metal, the moss creeping over plastic, and the bioluminescent glow of the hermit crab’s algae. Meanwhile, the soundscape adds an unseen layer of depth, making the space feel almost alive. The faint buzzing of bees from the radio, the croaking of frogs from the bubblegum machine, and the drips of water echoing through the room subtly encourage visitors to listen just as much as they look.
By removing clear barriers between the photographic works and sculptural props, the space fosters a more interactive experience. Viewers may first be drawn to the framed images but then notice their three-dimensional counterparts just a few steps away, reinforcing the connection between what is captured in a moment and what evolves over time.
The Final Walkthrough
With everything in place, the most critical step remained: experiencing the exhibition as a visitor would. Walking through the space, taking in the interplay of lighting, sound, and spatial arrangement, and making small refinements to ensure the smoothest, most engaging flow. Adjusting the blacklight for the hermit crab prop, fine-tuning the brightness of certain spotlights to enhance contrast, and testing optimal distances for viewing the prints - every tiny detail played a role in shaping the final experience.
And then, in a quiet moment of realization, it became clear: after months of relentless effort, creative problem-solving, and artistic risk-taking, Life Finds a Way was finally ready to be shared.
Looking Ahead: The Opening Weekend
Now that the space is fully prepared, all that remains is the most exciting part - welcoming visitors into the world of Life Finds a Way. In just a few days, guests will step into the exhibition for the first time, engaging with the photographs, standing before the sculptural props, immersing themselves in the layered soundscape, and forming their own interpretations of the work.
This project has been a journey - one of exploration, challenge, and discovery. The process of creation has been just as transformative as the themes the exhibition explores. Now, the true test begins: seeing how the audience connects with it, how they respond, and what emotions it stirs within them.
This has been a journey of countless hours of labor, creative risk-taking, and problem-solving. Now, it’s time to see how the audience engages with it. Next up: Launching the Exhibition with a successful Opening Night!
